Information Services

GMRDC’s Department of Information Services is pleased to offer a wide-ranging array of capabilities to our member governments. Our department’s primary focus is on Geographic Information Science (GIS), a valuable tool used in communicating spatial data. We have a sizeable collection of datasets in-house and can use our data mining and field collection skills to enhance an existing project or deliver fully-customized data layers and finished maps. Our costs remain low, allowing us to create very high quality graphic resources at considerable savings to our members.

In addition to assisting in projects on behalf of our municipalities, our department supports the efforts of the GMRDC Planning Department through mapping and spatial analysis.

Some projects in which the two departments have used their combined expertise include:

  • Land Use evaluations

  • TMDL Stream mapping

  • Inventory of Community & Historic resources

We are currently coordinating a region-wide effort to produce ortho-rectified color digital aerial photo sets. The flights are slated for early 2008, when the highest-quality, leaf off imagery can be obtained. This is a prime opportunity to realize significant cost savings over aerial flights by individual counties. The end result will be a set of air photos with very high (1 foot) resolution, which will be invaluable for display, boundary analysis, assessment of property, and verifying the accuracy of other spatial data layers.

We’re also in the midst of a large-scale undertaking in conjunction with Hart County. We have contracted with the County to convert the existing digital AutoCAD tax parcel maps to ESRI ArcGIS geo database and will update with splits and merges to those parcels through December 2006 in anticipation of an upcoming revaluation of real property.

Information Services continues to assist the Georgia Department of Transportation in ongoing improvements to its digital inventory of transportation infrastructure. We have just completed an assessment of the centerlines of all known bridges in our 13 county region and will soon mount a similar effort to map regional railway crossings.

We have entered into a partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau and Department of Community Affairs in anticipation of the next nationwide population survey, to take place in 2010. GMRDC Information Services is working on behalf of 46 of its 51 member communities to conduct a Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA). The information obtained through the census is used to apportion seats in the House of Representatives, appropriate state and federal funds, and provide statistics for grant applications. Contact Molly Segers, LUCA Liaison, with any questions regarding LUCA.

While we have many exciting efforts to occupy our time in fiscal 2008, we are never too busy to serve our membership. We can maintain tax parcels, conduct site/utility inventories, make maps in support of grant applications, update zoning and floodplain boundaries, and much more. What can we do for you?
